Juan Manuel Santos spoke at a Colombia business forum with British investors in the City – London’s financial district – as part of a three-day visit to the island nation.

Colombia was open to international investment and needed foreign capital, Santos said.

During the event, which was also attended by the UK’s Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox, the two countries were set to sign a bilateral agreement to avoid double taxation for businesses.

Santos spoke about the agreement that the Colombian government had reached with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia guerrilla group that suffered a setback due to the outcome of a referendum.

He said that he hoped the peace agreement with FARC could be secured in the close future, going on to say that meetings had taken place with opposing groups with a view to reaching a new pact.

The statesman added that peace was one of his priorities, along with strengthening the economy and making Colombia the best educated country in Latin America.

Fox, a supporter of Brexit, announced a new chapter in UK-Colombian business relations and called on British companies to invest in the Latin American country.

Santos was set to visit the National History Museum and meet with UK Prime Minister Theresa May in her official 10 Downing Street residence later in the day.

The president is to visit Belfast on Thursday in order to bare witness to the economic benefits Northern Ireland has seen since the peace process.
