Who were the athletes who won at the 2018 Oscars?

Last Sunday, March 4, the 90th edition of the Oscar Awards was held, granted by the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences. The award gives the statuette to the best films, such as long films, short films, animated films, documentaries, among others. This year's ceremony was full of political messages and inclusion.

As for the sports scene, different disciplines were present at the grand ceremony. Among the winners were awarded an animated short film and a documentary related to sports.

"Dear Basketball"

One of the legendary moments for the sports world was the award given to one of the best basketball players in history: Kobe Bryant. The animated short written by the athlete, called "Dear Basketball", narrates his love and passion for basketball. Glen Keane was in charge of directing this animated short while printing a powerful emotional charge.

Bryant became the first NBA player to be awarded with an Oscar. The statuette stands out in its record that includes five times champion of the NBA, two times more valuable player in the NBA finals, and twice-Olympic gold medal.

"Icarus"

Another work awarded with the golden statuette was Icarus, as Best Documentary. This production narrates the investigation that reveals the Russian doping program to its athletes. The documentary focuses on the interview that the director of this documentary, Bryan Fogel, made to the chemical scientist Grigory Rodchenkov.

Rodchenkov was the director of the laboratory of the Moscow Anti-Doping Center and was the one who unraveled the doping program sponsored by the Russian government. The International Olympic Committee sanctioned in December 2017 the Russian Olympic delegation in its participation for subsequent events, including the last Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018. The IOC allowed the participation of 13 Russian athletes clean of doping to the Olympic Winter Games held recently in South Korea.

"I, Tonya"

This thriller tells the story of the ice skater, Tonya Harding, in the nineties. The film recounts the various threats of death and aggressions that Harding performed against her direct rival, the skater Nancy Kerrigan.

Harding grew up in an environment of constant mental abuse by her mother, who manipulate every Harding’s movement, even taking her out of school to devote her time to training this sport. The athlete became one of the best skaters in the United States, but her behavior was not adequate.
