In addition to the obvious ones, you will find some that you may have not known and that we want to not go unnoticed at the beginning of the year. We also add variety in this list, both genres, and countries. They are not in a specific order, we liked them all equally. Do not forget to read the second part of this article with the other five films that marked us in 2018. Here they go.

The Favorite , Yorgos Lanthimos (United States, United Kingdom, Ireland)

The rare Greek director brings us his latest film. Although the official premiere was in the last days of 2018, it will debut these days in the Latin-American billboards under the name of La Favorita. In it, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, who has already collaborated with the director in The Lobster, are fighting over the favoritism of Queen Anne of Britain, played by the great Olivia Coleman. This comedy is hilarious and grotesque while reflecting on power, female insecurity and corruption. The director, who usually chooses to imagine futuristic and dystopian worlds, now opts for a period and semi-biographic film. It is his first foray into both genders and it has come out great.

Shoplifters , Hirokazu Kore-eda (Japan)

A film about family and compassion. A poor family living in Tokyo and resorting to theft to survive welcomes a girl they find a day in the cold. Although poor, they are a happy and optimistic family, but the arrival of the new member will change things a little. The film reflects the struggle of this family in a delicate and raw way at the same time, it brings out tears and smiles. It is a sign of humanity in a fierce reality in the middle of the city of Tokyo.

Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson (United States)

Made in stop-motion, Isle of Dogs tells the story of a dictatorial and liar mayor who, in the midst of the canine overcrowding in the fictional city of Megasaki, decides to send all the dogs to an island to avoid the supposed canine flu. It is then when a brave child decides to undertake a trip alone to the island to rescue his dog. This is a film about friendship and compassion, but it is also deeply political. It has intelligent comments about science and power while being fun and making us laugh. The films of Wes Anderson never disappoint when it comes to aesthetics, always precise and symmetrical, this director has already given us other beautiful productions. Isle of Dogs is not only aesthetically pleasing but also has a very smart story.

Zama, Lucrecia Martel (Argentina)

Based on Antonio Di Benedetto's Latin American classic, Zama has given Lucrecia Martel the recognition she deserves. The film goes around Don Diego de Zama, a Spanish magistrate who waits in the colony of the coast of Paraguay in the eighteenth century to be moved to join his family. The Argentine director, however, takes certain liberties with respect to the novel, which, instead of impoverishing it, enriches the story. In the film, we can find some jokes that are not in the book, jokes that make it a confusing comedy, a tone that does not have the novel by Di Benedetto. The film is intelligent and disturbing. Taste of cinema affirms that this film rubs against the western, which makes it even more interesting, as it wanders between genres and contexts. Photography is also a delight. Although it was in theaters in the first half of 2018, it can now be seen through the Amazon streaming service.

Lazzaro Felice , Alice Rohrwacher (Italy)

This, the last film of the Italian director takes place somewhere in rural central Italy. There, where there is almost no contact with the modern world and where the pastoral system seems to be all there is, lives Lazzaro, the protagonist of this film. Lazzaro is happy, as the title says, in his pastoral life, until an unexpected friendship with the son of a marquis, who is dissatisfied with the feudal system that reigns where they live, changes his pace and his outlook on life. It can be seen on Netflix, as it is produced by the streaming platform.
