Karol G More Than Reggaeton Diva
Carolina Giraldo Navarro, known as Karol G (age 31) is a singer and composer from Medellin. She is famous for hits like Tusa, Bichota, and La Dama, which reveal a strong, economically and emotionally independent, and determined woman.

Two things embody the songs of Karol G. Firstly, from the beginning, as an artist, she realized the difficulty for women to access a place in the reggaeton scene and worked harder to find a place to communicate freely, independently from her producers or industry itself. Secondly, the lyrics talk about strong women capable of thinking beyond love stereotypes.
After participating in the talent show Factor X, Karol battled with the male industry. In 2012 the singer became known worldwide with her "301" single recorded with Reykon. The "Mi Cama" remix received critics from feminists worldwide, mainly from Latin America.
Since she gained a reputation within the feminist debate, she took advantage of her exposure and started talking about women and the reggaeton industry from the sorority. Her success opened paths for other women in the music industry.
"I feel that we as females must have more opportunities, but that also depends on us as women saying: 'I can do this and let's move on,'" the interpreter said for the Los Angeles Times.
Her success is measured with her first album, "Unstoppable," which reached the top charts of the best urban music albums, and with it, she earned a Latin Billboard nomination and a world tour. From that moment on, Karol G was considered one of the exponents of urban music, for which she broke one of the most critical barriers in the music industry: The gender gap.
Recently the Bichota Tour showed that it is not enough to have feminist songs. Also, the artists involved female logistics, dancers, singers, and musicians and most of her crew were women. One of those bichotas was Susy Vázquez, her guitarist, who did an impressive solo at the show in Movistar Arena Bogota.
According to a research professor at the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Xochimilco, when a woman takes place in the reggaeton scene, she creates a disruptive space for women to express themselves from different points of view.

"We see how Karol G —as well as other reggaeton female artists— talk about their body and emotions outside the traditional standards of heterosexual-romantic love. She gives priority to her life experience to talk about pleasure, sexuality, and freedom," wrote the researcher.
Also, Jeepeta is a symbolic representation of male power. The same happens with "Bichota." Karol G changed the Puerto Rican expression Bichote, which initially only referred to successful men. Some of Karol G's songs that talk about female empowerment are: "Tusa," "La Dama," "Ahora Me Llama," "200 Copas," and "Bichota."
