Police initially took the turtles to a zoo after seizing them from an animal trafficker.

APLAB members in La Paz concluded that the zoo did not have the facilities to care for the hatchlings and agreed to care for them until they could be released in the Amazonian province of Beni.

The turtles will be sent this week to Beni, where officials will return the animals to their native habitat.

Bolivian law prohibits the purchase, sale and transportation of wildlife without a permit, Serrano said.
