There is, despite the increasing importance that has been given to the subject during the last years, a stigma around mental health problems that prevent people from getting the necessary help. That is why, with the aim of informing, we gather here some of the most common myths according to the newspaper La Prensa, MentalHealth.gov and Salud Siempre:

1. Myth: A weak personality or flaws in character lead to the development of mental health problems so that people can easily eliminate them.

Reality: This type of problem has nothing to do with being weak or weak, because in its development contribute many factors: biological, such as injuries, physical diseases, genes or brain chemistry; family history of mental health problems and life experiences, such as trauma or a history of abuse

2. Myth: Mental illness equals mental retardation.

Fact: Mental delays are characterized by limitations in learning and a significantly lower than average intellectual capacity. On the other hand, mental illnesses are syndromes and behavioral or psychological patterns that appear associated with some malaise.

3. Myth: Children have no mental health problems.

Fact: In fact, half of the mental health disorders have symptoms before a person turns 14 and three quarters begin before age 24. Then, even young children can display warning signs about their mental health that allow them to assist a specialist early so that the disease does not interfere with their development.

4. Myth: People who suffer from mental health problems are not productive or helpful.

Reality: With the necessary treatment and support, these people can become just as productive and efficient as anyone else. In fact, feeling useful has a positive effect on your mental health. However, rejection, lack of intervention, prejudice, and stigmatization if they can turn them into people unfit to manage society.

5. Myth: People with mental disorders are violent and dangerous.

Fact: On the contrary, due to his illness, it is much more possible for a person with a mental health problem to hurt himself or herself than another.
