In the case of watching movies, streaming platforms have become more and more famous, as they are releasing series and movies that become viral. Of these platforms, one could say that Netflix is the most popular, both for its continuous library update and for the new series that are constantly being released as Stranger Things or its most recent success, Sabrina's Hidden World.

However, Netflix is not the only one in the streaming video market, so here at LatinAmerican Post we recommend three platforms that might interest you.

Amazon Prime Video

This is probably the most direct competitor of Netflix, since it is a section of the Amazon technological giant, so it has a large budget. For this reason, it is able to offer its subscribers a large library of content, between series and movies, for USD $ 5.99 per month.

As mentioned in the PC World portal, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are very similar in their proposal, although Amazon is also distinguished by certain things. For example, "Amazon also has the advantage of X-Ray, a very useful tool that allows you to access information about the actors, backgrounds and more information about the series or movie of the IMDb database". This can be very useful if you want to have a more informed review of the movie you have in front of you.

Another important difference is that while on Netflix all the content of the library is available, "in Amazon Prime Video, only the content with a banner where Prime is placed is available to be viewed with your subscription". A negative aspect, since, if you want to see the content not available in Prime, you must pay an extra cost.

Finally, some of the recommended series are The Walking Dead, Mr. Robot or Boardwalk Empire.

MUBI

With a rather peculiar format, Mubi is the platform that can satisfy your cinephile desires, in case you prefer author's films or difficult to find. As they say on their official website, "Our film library is brimming with visionary films that wouldn’t fill a single cinema in Belgium for a week – not even a day".

This is not proposed with the intention of exclusivity, but with a desire to bring people who enjoy this type of film, even if they are from different parts of the world: "If you were looking for the world (in its entirety), suddenly you could find an audience of thousands for these rare cinematic surprises. And we don’t think a thousand people should be ignored just because they happen to live in different time zones or far away from Belgian cinemas".

Its format consists of having a library of 30 films that are constantly changing, that is, each day leaves one and another enters. This constant rotation makes the curing of the films very careful to justify to the subscriber that each movie that comes up has some aspect that attracts attention. Also, the platform not only raises cinema classics but risks showing films that are currently in festivals, so that some can find the latest jewels at the Berlinale, Cannes or the Venice festival. All this for the price of USD $ 10.99 per month.

As the official website states, "MUBI is not just about discovering wonderful new cinema or classic masterpieces. It’s also about discussing and sharing these discoveries, which makes us like a small coffee shop… a place where you can gather and talk about alternative endings, directors’ cuts, and whatever those frogs in Magnolia meant. Heated debates and passionate arguments are welcome".

Retina Latina

Finally, there is Retina Latina, the free platform to watch Latin American cinema, promoted by the governments of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, and Colombia. As explained on the official website, "the proposal arises from the need to generate concrete regional actions to respond to three conditions: lack of a consolidated regional market, the concentration of successful national works in the local market that are not exhibited in neighboring markets, and insufficiency of regional coordination mechanisms for cinema distribution ".

Thus, this platform seeks to bring the public of Latin American cinema closer to supply the difficulties of distribution in cinemas. For this reason, taking advantage of the internet facilities, the site has a library of fiction films, documentaries, and shorts from the countries that support this initiative. Thus, you can see what cinema is being produced in Bolivia or in Peru, countries whose film production is not usually as visible on a continental level as Argentina.
