She then added: "I realized that Colombia has a rich ethnic heritage, with approximately 80% of the population having mixed European or European heritage."

Penelope plays Graciela, an expert Colombian psychologist. Another female lead in The 355 is Fan Bingbing, a Chinese actress and model who plays Lin Mi Sheng, a secret agent who remains mysterious throughout the film.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jessica Chastain said: "My goal and dream for The 355 is that we just accept the fact that women are amazing, strong and tough. The name of the movie is those specific numbers because 355 was the codename of the first female spy during the American Revolution. Nobody knows her real name until today. The film honors women in espionage in the United States by showing their work behind the scenes.
