Sustainable agriculture: this is how Orinoquia's production will be

During the international conference Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 (TFA), which took place in Bogotá, the launch of the BioCarbono Fund was announced, which will promote the sustainable development of the Colombian Orinoquia, made up of the departments of Arauca, Meta, Casanare, and Vichada. The Ministry of Environment explained that the $ 20 million dollars that will be invested were delivered by the governments of the United Kingdom, Germany, and Norway in order to reduce "the emissions of greenhouse gases generated by agriculture, deforestation, and other uses from the earth".

The main objective of this alliance, led by the national government in collaboration with the World Bank, seeks to implement an intelligent agriculture that responds to the environmental and climatic challenges the planet faces. With this Fund, the region would implement sustainable and technological practices to protect the different ecosystems of the region and mitigate the consequences of climate change.

According to the Ministry, "the strategy of the BioCarbon Fund for Sustainable Forest Landscapes (IPFS) is a multilateral fund supported by the governments of the Federal Republic of Germany, the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of Norway, the United, Switzerland, and the World Bank administration."

Why the Orinoquia?

This region is characterized by housing different ecosystems, among which there are wetlands, tropical forests, and the savannah. For this same reason, the Orinoquia is a region rich in biodiversity with 35% of endemic species. This is why its protection and sustainable use become so important for the economic development of the region and its environmental protection.

It should be noted that in this Colombian area 16% of the polluting emissions are produced at the national level, so the implementation of smart and sustainable practices becomes fundamental in the current environmental situation. In addition to reducing polluting gases, it is expected to mitigate the accelerated deforestation that the country is experiencing.

Ricardo Lozano, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, said that "the Orinoquia region has been selected as a strategic area for the implementation of this initiative. This, due to its potential for sustainable growth, through low-carbon development models that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and contribute to the reduction of deforestation."

Semana Sostenible ensures that the program proposed by the Fund "in the Orinoco region will focus on promoting a business environment conducive to sustainable agricultural practices and production systems by strengthening institutional capacities, at the national, regional and local, to plan, implement and monitor integrated landscape management".
